Our Story

Emma has loved baking since she was a little girl. She grew up baking with her Mum, Grandma and Granddad, she has fond memories of growing up helping her Granddad decorate the Christmas cake every year.

Emma never knew what she wanted to be when she grew up, but found a career for over six years within a cinema chain, and worked her way up within the company. In 2011 she decided that it was time for a change and quit her job and went backpacking around Europe with her partner Bobby. On her return to the UK she took a job within a large restaurant chain, but knew this wasn't what she wanted to do long term.

Her light bulb moment came at her friends little boys birthday party. Emma had made his birthday cake, and spent the whole party with other parents asking how much she would charge and if she could make them a cake. She went home that night full of enthusiasm and determination to make this happen and found out she could set up a cake business from home. After a lot of research and red tape, EmzCakes was born in Emma's little home kitchen.

Over the next two years, the business grew and grew and the orders came rolling in through her Facebook business page. As she got busier her full time job slowly became part time, and the cakes took over. She would often finish work at 11.30pm and go home to finish orders or bake then get up and go to work again the next morning. The cake bug had well and truly grabbed hold of Emma and had also taken over the house. It was at this point when Emma's partner Bobby told her "it's time to get the cake out of the house now".

Emma began to look at how to grow the business and how to take the next step into opening a shop and the direction she wanted to take.

In 2013 while looking into funding one night, she came across a competition called Test Town. Emma filled out the application and forgot all about it, until a few months later when she got a call one morning telling her she had made the final 10 out our thousands of people who had applied! The competition took place in Scotland, and each of the 10 teams got an empty shop unit to use for the week, with 4 days to set up and 3 days to trade to the public, with judges and secret shoppers visiting too. It was like Dragons Den meets The Apprentice.

Emma got to test out her ideas on the public and the response was amazing. Unfortunately she didn't win the £10,000 prize, but got to keep the takings from the weekend, and also now had the experience and feedback to help move the business forward.

On returning home, she was full of mixed emotions. There was sadness at not winning, but also a fire of determination to show everyone that she could do it anyway and spent the next year working even harder to make that dream a reality.

On Saturday 21st June 2014 EmzCakes Creative Cafe opened the doors for the first time and Emma and her family haven't looked back since.

Emma's Mum Joan and Emma's partner Bobby help too, and the business is always growing and working on new products and ideas all the time. Emma also has a small team who work with her and have become a little cakey family of team members past and present.

Emma and her team bake everything from scratch, to order and every cake is finished by hand with love and passion. Emma takes on a limited number of bespoke wedding and celebration cakes each week, and advanced booking for this type of cake is essential as dates book up months ahead of time! They also have an amazing range of cakes and bakes that can be ordered online and with at least 7 days advanced booking.

Thank you so much to everyone who has been part of this journey!
